According to a new report by Medscape, Grand Rapids is one of the best cities in the U.S to practice medicine. Our city, which even has a street aptly named the “the Medical Mile” did not break the top 10 cities, coming in 11th on the survey’s 2017 list.
Rankings were based on a number of factors, including the number of actions by the medical board, income, patient loads, malpractice lawsuit rates, and the quantity of physicians. Many other factors were also considered including the general population’s well-being, crime and divorce rate levels – even traffic volumes and how overall “happy” the population is.
Who took # 1? Minneapolis, followed by Madison WI, Sioux Falls, SD, Des Moines and Burlington, VT. Grand Rapids was the sole Michigan city to make the list.
What city ranks as the worst for doctors? New Orleans. They also had the “least healthy” population according to the survey.
No surprise that the #1 burnout specialty is in emergency medicine. Family medicine and plastic surgery, surprisingly, had high frequency burnout levels as well.

However, Fargo, North Dakota had the highest paid doctors, according to the report.
Omaha, Nebraska was the best city for families and Columbia, Maryland was the top city for pet lovers, according to Medscape.
